ANDREA BORLAND
On Thursday 30th September 2021, Andrea Boreland, loving daughter, sister, auntie, cousin, friend and coach passed away at age 49. Andrea leaves behind a permanent legacy within the UK basketball community, her passion in helping young people was boundless and inspirational, whether that be through the London Basketball Association, London Youth Games, and a place she holds close to her heart, Hackney College. Andrea loved sports as a child, and was introduced to Brixton Topcats by Alex Raymond at the age of 16. She trained and worked hard, and by 18, she became the manager of the women’s team. Passionate about the sport, Andrea went out into the world to take basketball everywhere she could, inspiring students, boys, and girls to take up the game. Most importantly, she gave them hope and direction in a challenging world. At Hackney College, now New City College, not only did she lead the team to win more National titles than any other; but more importantly, memories of Andrea in the lives that she touched will live on. Not only was Andrea selected as part of the officiating crew of the 2012 London Olympics, she also fulfilled her dream to coach in Europe the same year, taking part in the team’s first ever game in the Champion League. She later became the first and only ever female Coach of the London Lions Basketball Club as assistant to Vince Macaulay, winning the League Championship in 2019. Andrea lived for her love of sports, her beloved Liverpool FC and her family. Her humour was infectious, and whether she was coaching a 6’ 10” player or introducing the game to primary school children, she was larger than life. She will be greatly missed.
