Just Stop Oil activists stopped traffic on main roads in north London to protest the greenlighting of a new coal mine by the government.
Protestors took to the streets of Finsbury Park and Camden Town this morning following Levelling Up secretary Michael Gove’s decision to approve the mine at Whitehaven in Cumbria last week.
At 8am today (December 14), 17 Just Stop Oil supporters wearing hi-vis vests walked onto Green Lanes, Finsbury Park and proceeded to march slowly northwards accompanied by around seven police officers.
Later in the morning, activists carried out a similar action around Camden Town station.
This is the second time this week that the group has protested in Camden, following a march on Monday (December 12).
Peter Smith, 30, a Just Stop Oil supporter from Haringey, said: “If we continue down the road we are currently on we don’t have a future.
“Normal people need to take a stand and support Just Stop Oil in stopping new fossil fuel licences and moving towards a sustainable future.”
A Department for Levelling Up spokesperson said on the weekend that coal from a new mine in Cumbria "will be used for the production of steel and would otherwise need to be imported".
“The mine seeks to be net zero in its operations and is expected to contribute to local employment and the wider economy," they said.
