A north London Wetherspoon pub that was under offer has finally closed its doors to customers.
The Angel pub in Islington High Street has stopped trading, after it was reportedly under offer earlier this year.
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon confirmed that the pub had now closed, and said he understands it to have been taken over by another pub company.
He thanked The Angel’s “loyal customers and staff”, adding that the decision to close the Wetherspoon was “a commercial decision”.
He said: “We can confirm that The Angel pub has closed. We would like to thank our loyal customers and staff. This is a commercial decision by Wetherspoon.”
The Angel was among nearly 40 Wetherspoon pubs put up for sale after the chain warned it faced losing £30 million due to repair costs and rising staff wages.
The Wetherspoon is now set to be replaced by a pub called ‘The Junction’ sometime next month.
The new venue described itself as a pub and kitchen, and claimed to be perfect for “live sport, Saturday brunch or a Sunday roast”.
It also promised “great food, craft beer, wine and cocktails”.
Islington Gazette has reached out to ‘The Junction’ for more information.
