A 75-year-old man knocked unconscious when he slipped at a pub is still waiting for it to return his bag almost five months later.
And John Kirkhope, who lives in Cumbernauld, Scotland, fears he may never see it again after the JD Wetherspoon chain, which owns The Angel in Islington, sold the premises.
The architect was knocked out on a visit to the Upper Street pub during a drip to London on March 10.
He spent four days in hospital, but despite contacting Wetherspoon several times, his bag has still not been returned.
The architect described how one misfortune led to another.
With back problems and waiting for major eye surgery, he was told by staff to use the ladies’ toilets to avoid risking the stairs.
John says that as he left a cubicle “obviously designed for tiny people”, his bag got caught on the door and he slipped on the wet floor.
The 75-year-old added: “At that point, my shoulder bag must have snagged onto the door handle and the floor was awash with soapy water.
“It just completely spun me, and I fell on the floor and was knocked unconscious.”
He was taken to University College Hospital where it took four days for him to recover.
John said: “When they bundled me into the taxi they forgot to put the bag in with me with some personal, sentimental and valuable things in.”
After returning home to Scotland after leaving hospital, John was told his bag was in the pub manager’s office.
But the 75-year-old said that since then there has been “silence” from the pub chain.
The Islington Gazette reported last month that The Angel had been replaced by a new pub after it was sold by Wetherspoon.
This has heightened John’s concern about his bag as the new pub “could’ve cleared everything out”.
He added that he has just had eye surgery so is not currently able to travel to London to collect his bag, and would instead like it to be returned to him by JD Wetherspoon.
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We thank the newspaper for bringing this matter to our attention.
“We will immediately investigate to ensure that Mr Kirkhope has his bag returned to him.”
