A sixth low-traffic neighbourhood (LTN) has been made permanent in Islington.
Islington Council has said that the Amwell LTN, covering some roads in Clerkenwell, received positive feedback during an 18-month trial.
First introduced in November 2020, the scheme installed traffic filters in Great Percy Street, Lloyd Square and Margery Street.
The council says that a public consultation into the trial found that 43% said they felt the air was cleaner in the neighbourhood, while only 10% disagreed.
More people agreed than disagreed that it was easier to walk, cycle and cross the street since the trial’s introduction.
The council said its monitoring data also found that traffic had fallen on roads in the area and cycling had increased.
Cllr Rowena Champion, Islington Council’s executive member for environment, air quality, and transport said: “For many years, local people told us they wanted to see action to create greener, healthier, more welcoming streets – and that’s why we’ve been delivering low-traffic neighbourhood trials since 2020.
“Three years on, we’re delighted with the impact of the schemes. Making the Amwell neighbourhood permanent is another positive step, and it’s clear that the scheme has delivered huge benefits for local people.”
