A NEW shop in London which sells "Scottish scran" ran out of Tennent’s and Irn-Bru on its opening weekend.  

Gregg Boyd, the founder of Auld Hag, opened his new store – The Shoap – in Angel last Friday.

Originally from Kirkintilloch, Boyd (below) had told the Islington Gazette's sister paper The National about how he had first worked as an economist before his interest in food and drink led to a desire to set up his new business.

It stocks a wide range of classic Scottish produce with everything on sale coming from north of the Border, including cheese from Inverness to Mull, smoked fish from East Neuk, as well as beer and charcuterie from Edinburgh.

Speaking to The National following the opening, Boyd said: “We ran out of Tennent’s on Saturday night, we had three kegs and we sold all the cans as well so that was good news and quite funny.

“We also ran out of all the Irn-Bru and tattie scones and sold out of the food each day. I think we served 400 customers each day.

“A lot of people came through and it was really busy with loads of nice customers. Some people had travelled from Kent and even further than that to get some stuff they hadn’t had for a long time.

“A lot of people were sharing their love for the shop and the idea of it. Some of them had been living for 40 years in London and hadn’t had anything like it so they were very pleased.”

Prior to opening The Shoap, Boyd operated a delivery service for people looking to get their share of haggis, neeps and tatties while living in London.

On the new business, he previously told The National: “I want to give suppliers a chance around Scotland which nobody seems to know about but I know are brilliant.”
