A housing association has said it is “looking at all of the circumstances” after a five-year-old girl was pulled from a canal and later died.
The girl, who has been named locally as Malika Hibu, died after she went missing from her home in Wharf Road, Islington, on February 17.
The street runs parallel to City Road basin and perpendicular to the Regent’s Canal.
Malika was reported missing from Crest Buildings at around 4.15pm that afternoon.
Officers carried out an immediate search of the area, and the girl was found in the canal around ten minutes later.
Malika was rescued from the water and officers carried out CPR, before she was rushed to hospital by paramedics.
Police have said that she died at around 7pm that same evening.
Peabody, the housing association that runs Crest Buildings, has now said that it is “looking at all the circumstances” surrounding her death, and promised to support the authorities in their investigations.
Tracy Parker, managing director at Peabody, said: “This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts are very much with Malika’s family and friends as they go through this incredibly difficult time.
“Our neighbourhood team has been visiting residents to check in and offer support where needed.”
Police have said that enquiries are ongoing, but that the circumstances “are not believed to be suspicious”.
