Free cups of coffee and a choir performance are set to mark 25 years of Islington Farmers’ Market.
The farmers market’ in Chapel Market near Angel Tube station was the first to come to London in 1999.
It will celebrate 25 years on Sunday, June 23 with free coffee, cake cutting, a cooking demonstration, a choir performance, and a hamper giveaway.
Established at a time when there were no farmers’ markets in London, the brand now has 20 weekly markets across the capital, with around 200 farmers selling their products.
Founder, Nina Planck, said: “In New York City, where I live, I think about local food and about my beloved London Farmers' Markets every day.
“My new delight is watching the children of English farmers I first met 25 years ago, in 1999, all grown up and running farms and markets with the best practices of their parents - and with their own new ideas. Plus, they're having farm babies!”
Kicking off the anniversary market at 10am, Abol Coffee will give away a free cup of coffee or tea to the first 25 customers.
At midday, chef Francesco Mazzei, who has worked in five-star hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants across Europe, will be running a live cooking demonstration.
The Italian chef has promised to cook up a seasonal treat, as well as handing out free samples.
At 1pm, choir The Union Chapel Singers will be performing for market-goers.
Heidi Fermor of Perry Court Farm said that Islington farmers market started at the “ideal time”, when supermarkets had started putting many small independent farmers out of business.
She said that the market had allowed the farm to keep its “wide range” of apples, pears, strawberries, and other fruits and vegetables.
Heidi added: “Most importantly it gives the farmers a unique opportunity to meet the customer on a weekly basis, forming many friendships which are essential for we often work in a solitary industry and also an ideal platform for testing new and old varieties and getting an immediate response."
A hamper giveaway is also planned for the market’s 25th anniversary.
