Arsenal will face six-time winners Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in a rematch of their knockout tie from 2017.

But unlike that previous meeting, which ended 10-2 to Bayern on aggregate, Arsenal head into the last-eight tie full of confidence with a good chance of winning, having been one of the best teams in Europe this season.

The additions of Declan Rice and David Raya have transformed Arsenal into arguably the best defensive team in Europe, giving them a solid platform against all teams they face.

This is especially the case since Jorginho has come into the side as a defensive midfielder, allowing Rice to operate further forward and win the ball back higher up the pitch, with Arsenal stifling everyone they play.

At the other end, Mikel Arteta has unlocked the attack since the turn of the year, with his side scoring 33 goals in a run of eight successive Premier League victories, deploying a combination of Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard up top.

Crucially, the Gunners are peaking at the right time this season.
Key players including Gabriel Jesus, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Thomas Partey are returning to fitness and the international break gives them a chance to ramp up before the run-in.

In the last tie, Arsenal squeaked past Porto after a 4-2 penalty shootout win at Emirates Stadium.

Many expected a bigger margin of victory, but the Portuguese side are a good defensive outfit and the manner of the victory, overcoming adversity and the pressure of a massive occasion is perhaps more symbolic than an easy win would have been.

Much of last season was about overcoming hurdles like beating Liverpool in the league and winning away at Tottenham, and this season has similarities, beating Manchester City and progressing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Bayern currently sit second in the Bundesliga, 10 points adrift of Bayer Leverkusen, and on track to miss out on the league title after 11 successive wins. Former nemesis Harry Kane has 31 league goals in 26 games and will surely have a big part to play in the tie.

The first leg takes place at the Emirates on April 9, with the second leg in Munich on April 17, with the winners taking on Real Madrid or Manchester City in the semi-finals.
